Long Live Jack LaLanne

The memorable fitness guru Jack Lalanne died at his home in CA on Sunday from pneumonia at age 96. He was my favorite fitness personality. I remember watching his 30-minute fitness show back in the 1960's which ran for 34 years starting in 1959.

LaLanne opened the nation's first modern health club in Oakland, California, in 1936. It had a gym, juice bar and health food store. Soon there were 100 gyms nationwide.

But what he was most remembered by were his fitness stunts. At age 45, in 1959, he did 1,000 push-ups and 1,000 chin-ups in 86 minutes. In 1984 a 70-year-old LaLanne had himself shackled and handcuffed and towed 70 boats 1.5 miles in Long Beach Harbor (source: Reuters). Jack LaLanne was survived by his wife of 51 years and his two sons and daughter.

Jack LaLanne holds the push up record--1032 in 23 minutes. He held that record in the 50s, maybe that record has been broken. I don't know. For what its worth, I did 73 push ups in 1 minute back in 1987.
"I don't know Jack", but I felt like I knew him.
